DURHAM, N.C. — A woman charged with beating her 4-year-old daughter to death was denied bond Monday – four days after the child was found unresponsive in their Durham apartment.

Jessica Warren, 27, was arrested Friday on a charge of first-degree murder after confessing to Durham police that she beat Armani Hodges, who died Thursday night.

Durham Police Chief Jose Lopez said Warren admitted causing the injuries – including broken ribs – that ultimately led to the child's death.

Lopez said social service workers were involved with the family.

Family members who attended Warren's first court appearance Monday, however, said she's innocent of the murder charge and that evidence will prove it.

They declined to elaborate on what that might be.

"We have two losses right now. The very serious one is the loss of a wonderful little girl," Warren's aunt, L'Tanya Geddie, said. "We have to be patient and trust and have faith that the truth will come out that justice will occur."

Officers responding to a cardiac arrest call at Warren's Falls Pointe Drive apartment found Armani unconscious around 8:45 p.m. Thursday.

Efforts to revive the child were unsuccessful.
