LAWRENCE, N.C. — The Edgecombe County Water System issued a boil-water advisory Friday for residents around Lawrence and N.C. Highway 97.

Tests of water samples detected the presence of coliform bacteria. Coliform bacteria are an indicator that other, potentially harmful bacteria might be present.

Residents should boil all water used for human consumption, such as drinking, cooking, brushing teeth, making ice and washing hands. Boiling for one minute should kill any bacteria in the water.

The advisory remains in effect indefinitely.
