OXFORD, N.C. — Oxford police have preliminarily identified a body found in a shallow grave Wednesday afternoon as that of a man reported missing earlier that day.

Police Chief John M. Wolford said that Kirk Douglas Wright Sr., 54, of 611 Granville St., was reported missing around 9 a.m.

Officers canvassed the neighborhood and talked to a man who said he had found a makeshift grave in a wooded area behind an abandoned house at the end of 4th Street, police said. Once the body was removed from the shallow grave, a preliminary identification of Wright was made.

The cause of Wright's death hasn't been determined. The body has been sent to the State Medical Examiner's Office in Chapel Hill for an autopsy.

Detectives are following up on leads, and the State Bureau of Investigation is assisting in the investigation, Wolford said.
