FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Fayetteville police on Tuesday confirmed that the body found Saturday night in the Cape Fear River is that of 21-year-old DreQuan O'Dell, who disappeared Friday while swimming with friends.

O'Dell and two of his friends entered the river on Broad Street in Fayetteville, but only two exited the water. O'Dell never made it back to shore, according to officials.

Fayetteville Assistant Fire Chief Richard Bradshaw said authorities rescued one swimmer who was clinging to a branch, and the other was able to swim to safety.

O'Dell's family gathered along the river Saturday while the search continued. A boater found him floating in the river Saturday after passing thunderstorms had halted the official search.
