Best Halloween candy

Forget the costumes. It's the grab for free chocolate and sugar that keeps Halloween among our top holidays.

Halloween candy

In the battle between good neighbor (I don't want to be the mom who gives out granola bars) and dental visit enabler, I wait until the last minute to stock up for trick or treat. I want to avoid making that mid-evening run to re-stock when I realize my family has eaten more than we give out.

Here are our Five Faves:

Mini Snickers -- requested by my hubby but reasonably priced. They are easy to stock up on and demonstrate a commitment to brand-name chocolate appreciated by the discriminating trick-or-treater.
Reese's Pumpkins -- these are family-only. There's something about the special holiday shapes -- pumpkin, Christmas tree, Easter egg that makes you think you're getting a bit extra on the inside from the Reese's Peanut Butter Cup.
Mini Hershey's -- Can I count this separate from the Snickers? Simple, solid milk chocolate will satisfy every time.
Candy Corn -- the classic. No matter how much you love them (and I do), don't try to save some for the off season. They are just not the same outside October.
Mello pumpkins -- A shot of sugar in a bite-size package. Be careful not to eat the whole bag in one sitting. Since they are not individually wrapped, these and the candy corn won't work for giveaways. What a shame.

Admit it, a holiday that celebrates sugary indulgence is hard to outgrow, so dig your hand into that candy bowl and tell us what you come up with!
