North Carolina has a muddled history when it comes to gambling. It’s illegal in our state, except for the ever growing Cherokee casinos. Lawmakers and prosecutors continue the fight to push out video poker and sweepstakes.  At the same time,  the state run lottery generates hundreds of millions of dollars from consumers pressing their luck.

Now, comes fantasy sports. For years, friends and co-workers made their draft picks to compete for bragging rights and a few bucks. Today, websites like FanDuel and Draft Kings have turned fantasy sports into a multi-billion dollar online industry. A handful of states, most recently New York, now label the popular pay for play sites illegal.

Monday at 6 p.m., WRAL-TV examines the exploding popularity of commercial fantasy sports in North Carolina. We explore two key questions that determine whether it’s legal. Plus, learn where our attorney general stands on the games so many play.
