AUTRYVILLE, N.C. — A 69-year-old driver died on Wednesday in Sampson County when her vehicle was hit head-on by a log truck.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol said a van driving south on U.S. Highway 421 stopped to make a left turn around 4:30 p.m. when it was struck from behind by the log truck. The van was knocked off the road into a parking lot, but the log truck ran off the road, overturned and collided with a Buick.

Norma Page Howard, of Autryville, died in the wreck. The driver of the van was not injured.

The driver of the log truck was charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle, but authorities did not identify the person.
