SANFORD, N.C. — Authorities said Tuesday they are still trying to identify two people killed in a fiery weekend crash near Sanford.

A Chevrolet SUV was southbound on Pickard Road shortly before 12:30 a.m. Sunday when it ran off the right side of the road about 1.5 miles south of N.C. Highway 42 and collided with a mailbox, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol. The driver then over-corrected and crossed the center line of the road before over-correcting again and running off the right side of the road a second time.

The SUV then flipped, slammed into a utility pole and caught fire.

A witness was able to pull Tyrann Snipes, 22, of Sanford, from the back seat, but the driver and another passenger were trapped inside the burning vehicle and died, authorities said.
