ENFIELD, N.C. — Halifax County deputies charged an Enfield man Thursday with cashing a government check belonging to a dead man.

Sterling Douglas, 33, was charged with obtaining property by false pretense.

Investigators said Douglas cashed a U.S. Treasury check in May at an Enfield convenience store where he bought some gas. The check was made out to a man who died in February, authorities said.
