FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — A man in a wheelchair was charged Wednesday with trying to bring a handgun inside the Cumberland County Courthouse, authorities said.

Herbert Lawrence Yanke, 53, of 1122 Southwood Drive, entered the courthouse shortly after 1 p.m. to get a drink of water while waiting for a taxi, authorities said. As Yanke attempted to pass through security, he ran a bag through the X-ray screening, and a weapon was clearly visible and was immediately confiscated, authorities said.

Yanke, who doesn't have a conceal-carry permit, told deputies he had forgotten the handgun was inside the bag, authorities said. He was cited for carrying a concealed weapon and was released from custody.
