MEBANE, N.C. — Someone dropped an Australian gold piece worth about $1,200 into a Salvation Army collection kettle in Mebane Monday.

The $100 Australian Kangaroo is the latest gift from an anonymous donor who regularly enriches the Army's haul in Alamance County, according to Capt. Jimmy Taylor.

Taylor said the Salvation Army gets a call from the donor, who wants to make sure the coins are counted.

"I am taken back with each passing year that someone continually gives in such a fun and amazing way," Taylor told WFMY News. "I thank whomever you are for continuing to help us 'Do the Most Good' in Alamance County!"
