CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Charlotte attorney John Fennebresque was named Friday as the next chairman of the University of North Carolina system's Board of Governors.

Fennebresque, a partner and vice chairman of the McGuireWoods law firm, will succeed Chairman Peter Hans when his two-year term begins July 1.

Asheville attorney Louis Bissette was elected to serve as Board of Governors vice chairman, and Kinston pediatrician Dr. Joan Templeton Perry was elected board secretary.

Fennebresque called the opportunity to lead the UNC system exciting and daunting, adding that he was optimistic about working with the legislature on funding and policy issues.

"I believe this university system is the pathway to prosperity for the citizens of this state," he said.

A native of Oyster Bay, N.Y., and a 1970 graduate of UNC-Chapel Hill, Fennebresque served on the Board of Governors from 1995 to 1999 and rejoined the board in 2011. He currently chairs the board’s Committee on Personnel and Tenure and serves on its Public Affairs Committee.

"John is smart, capable, tireless, tenacious and, most important, a champion of higher education," Hugh McColl, former chairman and chief executive of Bank of America, said in a statement. "His leadership will be of great benefit to the citizens of the state of North Carolina. We are lucky for him to be willing to take this post."
