If your kids love to build things, here's a competition for them.

The North Carolina section of the American Water Works Association and the North Carolina Member Association of the Water Environment Federation will be holding a model water tower competition next month for fourth and fifth graders and middle schoolers.

The objective, according to the website, is to "make participants aware of the importance of reliable drinking water and the rewarding opportunities available in the water profession. The competition does this by having students develop an idea into a functioning water tower, just like water professionals do in the real world."

Kids will need to build a model water tower that can be filled and drained. There's more information and criteria at the contest's website. The registration deadline is Oct. 9. The competition is Oct. 24.

Prizes will be awarded to the top three finishers in each division - elementary and middle school. The top prize for first place is $300. It's free to enter.
