RALEIGH, N.C. — As Fortify crews continue to ramp up construction on Interstate 40, more big changes are on tap for the South Saunders Street exit in south Raleigh.

On Friday night, crews shut down Exit 298-B (U.S. Highway 70/401/N.C. Highway 50) for those headed east on I-40.

To access northbound or southbound South Saunders Street from I-40 East, drivers will use Exit 298-A and turn right or left at the traffic light at the bottom of the ramp. Crews have widened the ramp to accommodate additional traffic.

State Department of Transportation officials said the exit will remain closed for about a year to allow crews to work on the bridge and interchange.

Officials said message signs alerting drivers about the change are located along I-40 East ahead of the exit.
