Nancie Norvell can pursue her two passions - art and working with children - with her business The Painted Butterfly near Raleigh's Five Points.

The Raleigh mom of one's love for art began when she was a child. Her grandfather taught her to draw and paint. She took art classes in high school and college, though her career took her into the world of advertising and marketing.

Norvell stayed home with her daughter after she was born. And, about a year ago, she found a way to refocus her work on her life-long love of art. She bought The Painted Butterfly, which offers arts classes, birthday parties, summer camps, workshops and more for kids, in a space on Bickett Boulevard across the street from the popular playground at Roanoke Park and next door to Wine & Design. She caters to the three to nine-year-old crowd.

"Its for kids," she said. "It's all for kids."

Norvell offers everything from four to six-week classes, one-time workshops and create it together classes for parents and kids. She incorporates other activities - such as ballet or yoga - into some of her workshops. And she offers programs during school holidays and some Saturdays and Sundays.

"I love being with kids," she said. "I love getting a chance to have them express themselves through art."
