Art museum to host unique, family-friendly theater event

The Rural Academy Theater features a horse-drawn wagon carrying a merry troupe of actors, musicians and dancers.

I wrote last week about Paperhand Puppet Intervention's annual summer show in Chapel Hill, which hits the N.C. Museum of Art in September.

The museum also is planning another unique, innovative performance for the fall that's fit for families.

In fact, says George Holt, the museum's director of performing arts and film, "We believe that fans of Paperhand Puppet Intervention will be especially charmed by this original mix of live theater, music, shadow puppetry and film.”

It's the Rural Academy Theater, which performs at 7 p.m., Oct. 17, outside in the museum park. Tickets are $10. Kids 6 and under are free. The performance is followed by a silent movie with live musical accompaniment.

Here's a description of the event from the art museum: "A horse-drawn wagon makes its way onto the museum grounds carrying a merry troupe of actors, musicians, and dancers. Harking back to a mythical past, the Asheville-based Rural Academy Theater presents an evening of wondrous original theater, music, and shadow puppetry, capped off by the screening of a silent movie classic accompanied by live music. The performances are staged from the wagon."

I'm told that a limited number of tickets will be sold for this. They are now available on the art museum's website.
