DURHAM, N.C. — A Durham man has been charged in a fatal shooting Tuesday afternoon, police said.

Christopher Alexander Hicks, 21, is charged with murder, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and possession of a stolen firearm. He was being held without bond Wednesday in the Durham County jail.

Bicycle officers on patrol heard shots at about 3:45 p.m. Tuesday and found Jevontez Deshawn Massey, 22, of Durham, lying in the street on Morning Glory Avenue near Belt Street, police said. He had been shot and was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

A K-9 officer spotted Hicks hiding in the woods nearby a couple of hours later, police said, and he was arrested after a brief chase.

Police didn't release any details about a possible motive in the shooting.

Anyone with information in the case is asked to call Durham police Investigator B.S. Jones at 919-560-4440, extension 29335, or Crime Stoppers at 919-683-1200.
