APEX, N.C. — Investigators in Apex were working Monday to find out what caused a house fire that sent a man to a local hospital.

Firefighters were called around 1:15 p.m. to 2613 Whistling Quail Run, where they found the basement of a home on fire.

Everyone was able to get out of the house, but a resident was taken to the North Carolina Jaycee Burn Center in Chapel Hill.

His condition was not known Monday afternoon.

Investigators at the scene said they think the fire started in the basement and that the people living there were alerted by a smoke alarm.

The basement suffered fire damage, and the rest of the home suffered extensive smoke damage, authorities said.
