Annual Christmas tree lighting set for State Capitol
The Christmas spirit will be glowing on the grounds of North Carolina's state capitol.
Posted — UpdatedGov. Beverly Perdue and First Gentleman Bob Eaves will light the Christmas tree on Thursday.
Prior to the tree lighting, a local band and choir will perform holiday music. The Junior Woman's Club will give away cookies and hot chocolate while local team mascots entertain the crowd. Girl Scouts will seek food donations for the local food bank as they go "Caroling for Cans."
The governor and first gentleman will make their way to the South grounds at 6:15 p.m. to begin the ceremony.
The 24-foot tree was grown by Peak Farms in Ashe County and will stand in honor of John L. Sanders and the state employees of North Carolina.
The Governor's Mansion also will be open for holiday yours through Sunday so people can view the decorations inside and enjoy performances of seasonal music. Hours vary, but no reservations are needed.
