Forecasters say Hurricane Ian will likely gain strength as it moves through the Gulf of Mexico with a track now aimed at Florida.

The American Red Cross of eastern North Carolina has been involved from the start. "Last week we supported Puerto Rico, so we have six people from eastern North Carolina that are assigned to the work in Puerto Rico and we have 3 people in Florida," said Phil Harris, an executive director with the American Red Cross in the Sandhills chapter.

He says the first step is an evacuation plan with the need to provide warmth and a dry safe place for the most vulnerable. He says the work will require more volunteers in Florida as well as here in North Carolina where heavy rain could become an issue.

Harris said, "We are encouraging people to go to www.redcross.org to volunteer, share what time you are available and what talents you can share with us. The goal is making our community a better and safer place."

He recommends you make arrangements now for the safety of your family as well as your pets. You should assemble a home safety kit that may include emergency items including non-perishable food supplies, plenty of water and any medications you may need if you are relocated to an evacuation shelter.
