One of the things I love about the Triangle is that we host some amazing live performances for kids and families.

Among them are the ADF Kids performances that are part of the American Dance Festival in Durham, which brings some of the world's top dancers to the Triangle every summer.

Tickets for the festival go on sale Monday. I thought I'd highlight the family performances here. I'll have more on the festival later.

Here's what scheduled for families. All performances are at 1 p.m. at the Durham Performing Arts Center and often include opportunities for the audience to interact with the performers. Tickets start at $18 except where noted.

  • June 30, Hubbard Street 2 performs Harold and the Purple Crayon. Tickets are $8
  • July 7, Pilobolus, a long-time festival favorite
  • July 21, Paul Taylor Dance Company
  • July 28, Mark Morris Dance Group

The festival also includes some special events after the family performances.

From 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., June 30 is Durham Dances, a free afternoon of music, dance and more at the American Tobacco Campus. The Paperhand Puppet Intervention, Scrap Exchange, Angelina Ballerina and more will be there.

And from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., July 7, July 21 and July 28, there will be music, snacks and more entertainment on the performing arts center's plaza.

Plus, the festival offers special Kids Night Out tickets. With the purchase of a regular-priced adult ticket, kids ages 6 to 16 can attend for free. There are a limited number of Kids Night Out tickets available. And an important note: Some of the performances have adult themes or nudity, so viewer discretion is advised. I'd recommend checking with the festival before you buy (and I'll have a post on this in the next couple of weeks too).
