Durham Bulls open 2016 season with win over Charlotte
DURHAM, N.C. — It’s hard to believe, but Durham Bulls Athletic Park is in its 21st year of hosting baseball – and top-notch entertainment. In that time, nearly 10 million fans of all ages have walked through the gates on Blackwell Street to experience the best of what minor league baseball has to offer.
Numerous upgrades and changes over the years, plus the always entertaining Wool E. Bull, have led to multiple well-deserved awards for gameday experience and 2016 may feature the best time at the ballpark yet.

From my daughter who attended her first game at two months to the Durham lifers that have seen countless games over the decades, there is truly something for everyone at DBAP. Here are a few of the best bets for people of all ages.

CORNER STORE: It’s the first thing you see when you enter the gates and the last thing you see before you leave. It’s also packed with anything and everything Durham Bulls.

From caps (I have three) and jerseys (I have two) to baby merchandise (Yep, picked up some of that too). Plus baseballs, bats, trading cards, T-shirts and game-worn memorabilia. If a Bull-in-a-D logo can be placed on it, they have it.

It caters to all ages and all budgets so go before, during or after games to get your gameday gear for the whole family.

WOOL E. WORLD: Gone are the days of relying on the aisle railings to play on for the kids. Wool E. World seems to get bigger and better every year – and for good reason.

The youngest of kids can slide down the slide, the intermediate ages will enjoy the crawl-through jungle gym and the more advanced can climb to the top of the spider web. And don’t forget the basketball court.

Conveniently located near food and restrooms in the right field corner, youngsters can get their fill of fun without ever watching a pitch – although I highly recommend mixing in some game action.

BULL DURHAM BEER COMPANY: For the 21-and-over crowd, baseball and beer are usually synonymous. At DBAP, they are making their own – and it’s good.

Bull Durham Beer Company currently features Lollygagger Kolsch (a personal favorite) and Water Tower Wheat.

Still a relatively new feature to the park, the brewery promises to add offerings to the menu in the future. And if you are attending a restaurant or event at American Tobacco Campus, look for Bull Durham beers to be there as well.

JACKIE’S LANDING: As part of the latest $19 million expansion project at DBAP before the 2014 season, the area down the right field line behind the seats was extended and placed upon it was a full-service bar named after the iconic Jackie Robinson.

New for 2016, a game area featuring corn hole, shuffleboard, foosball and a putting green was added.

A great place for small groups to gather, the beverages and multiple food options are right there and the games offer hours of fun. But pay attention, because it’s also a good place to catch a foul ball.

PICK A PROMOTION: It’s not a location at DBAP, it’s an experience at DBAP. Every homestand this season features something to get excited about. From fireworks on the weekends to kids running the bases on Sundays and $1 hot dogs on Thursdays. Plus, select games even let you bring your 4-legged family member.
BARK IN THE BALLPARK RETURNS ON MAY 27TH

A few can’t miss promos still to come this season – Two more Bark in the Park nights (June 8, Aug. 3), Comic Book Night (June 26), Lego night (Aug. 28) and a food truck fest (Aug. 31).
