RALEIGH, N.C. — Republican John Alexander continues to hold a slim lead in North Carolina's closest state Senate race following Wake County's official vote canvass on Friday, which added certain provisional votes and absentee ballots to the totals tallied on Election Night.

The official tally now gives Alexander 41,366 votes, while his Democratic opponent, Tom Bradshaw, earned 40,665. Typically, the few votes tallied up during the canvass are not enough to swing a race. In this case, however, there was some question as to whether Bradshaw would be able to call for a recount.

Because Alexander and Bradshaw remain separated by less than 1 percent of the votes cast in the race, Bradshaw still has that option.

Gary Pearce, a campaign consultant who worked with Bradshaw, said his client is inclined to call for a recount but hasn't definitely decided to do so. Bradshaw has until 5 p.m. Monday to file a letter with the Wake County Board of Elections.

Director Cherie Poucher said that the Wake County Board of Elections was tentatively scheduled to hold a meeting on Tuesday, and Bradshaw's recount request, if he makes one, would be one of the items that meeting handles.

Assuming Alexander holds onto the win, Republicans will hold a 34-16 majority in the state Senate.
