State officials OK Moore Square makeover

A master plan to redevelop the park on the east side of downtown was completed in 2011, but it has taken several years to fine tune the details. Plans include a proposed water feature facing the nearby Marbles Kids Museum, a natural area where children can play and a larger plaza along the southern edge of the square where a farmers market, concerts and other events could be held.

Because the state owns the 4-acre park – Raleigh merely manages the property – city officials also had to negotiate with state officials on plans to include a cafe and restrooms in the redevelopment.

"This park is an example that can be improved greatly," Gov. Pat McCrory said. "It needs help. It needs to be updated. It needs better landscaping."

McCrory said he often passes Moore Square during his evening walks.

The Council of State, a body that includes McCrory and the nine other statewide elected officials, voted unanimously to approve Raleigh's redevelopment plans.

City officials have said Moore Square will close during the makeover and reopen sometime in 2017.
