BENSON, N.C. — Authorities said a pickup truck trying to change lanes on Interstate 40 clipped a tractor-trailer Monday, causing an accident that briefly closed all westbound lanes in Johnston County near Benson.

The accident happened about 12:40 p.m. near mile marker 331, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

Troopers said the pickup, which was towing a camper, began merging from the right to the left lane. The driver apparently did not leave enough distance to change lanes, and the back of the camper caught the front of the tractor-trailer.

The impact caused the camper to fishtail, then both the camper and pickup truck overturned into the median, troopers said.

The pickup driver was described as an older man who suffered cuts. He was taken to WakeMed with non-life-threatening injuries.

Information on any charges in the accident was not immediately available.
