GOLDSBORO, N.C. — A large fire consumed an abandoned warehouse in Goldsboro Sunday morning.

Around 10 a.m., officials with the Goldsboro Fire Department responded to a fire at the former Goldsboro Builders Supply Company located at 118 S. Carolina Street in downtown Goldsboro.

The building, which locals said was at least 50 years old, had been a thrift store and storage site, but became vacant after flooding from Hurricane Matthew and was up for sale.

Officials have not yet determined what caused the fire, but crews said five additional departments had to help bring water to the scene after a significant water main break occurred overnight.

"Firefighters started battling the fire and because of the high winds, we had some debris hit a couple of houses the next street over. They were being extinguished quickly with very little damage," said Fire Chief Gary Whaley.
