CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Nine people have recently applied for the vacant police chief position in Chapel Hill, according to the town's information office.

The town re-posted the job on June 29 after former Fayetteville Police Chief Tom McCarthy was unable to accept due to health reasons.

The deadline for applications is Aug. 10. Town Manager Roger Stancil said he typically does not look at applications until the deadline.

Former Chief Gregg Jarvies retired in April after 30 years with the department. He is now serving on the panel investigating the Durham Police Department's handling of the Duke lacrosse case.
