82nd Airborne Paratrooper dies in wreck

An 82nd Airborne Division Paratrooper died Saturday after a wreck on Pamalee Drive, Fort Bragg officials said.

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — An 82nd Airborne Division Paratrooper died Saturday after a wreck on Pamalee Drive, Fort Bragg officials said. 

Fayetteville police said the wreck happened around 4:45 a.m. when a vehicle traveling east on Pamalee Drive was exceeding the speed limit. The vehicle lost control and struck a tree. 

The passenger, Spc. Matthew B. Thomas, 23, of Lockhart, Texas, died as a result of his injuries. Brandy Lewis, the driver, was taken to Cape Fear Valley Hospital and treated for non-life threatening injuries. 

Thomas was a wheeled vehicle mechanic at Fort Bragg. He joined the Army in June 2004. 

He is survived by his daughter, Natalie Thomas, his parents, Ronald B. and Catherine J. Thomas, all of Lockhart.
