SMITHFIELD — Two restaurants were shut down by health inspectors in the same week.

On Monday, 5 on Your Side reported that Gumby's on Hillsborough Street got a score of 60.5.

This time, it was the West End Grill on West Market Street in Smithfield. The eatery scored a 64.5 and was immediately shut down. Restaurants must score at least a 70 to stay open.

The bottom line, according to inspectors, West End was dirty. A sign says "Closed for remodeling ... Re-opening October 3," but that's not going to happen.

Among the violations were spoiled or out of date steak, beef, shrimp, and milk. "Numerous" dirty dishes were just left when employees went home for the day. And flies were "all over" a sink area.

The inspector wrote: "Major equipment cleaning needed in every area" and "lots of floor cleaning needed everywhere."

West End got a 97 during its last inspection. WRAL wasn’t able to contact an owner or manager.
