5 on Your Side Closes Door on Cabinet Hassles

When a Raleigh couple had a problem with the cabinets for a new home and could not get it fixed, it called 5 on Your Side for help.

RALEIGH, N.C. — The cabinets in Kurt and Stephanie Krueger’s home were solid cherry wood, but they were not the ones they really wanted.

So, in March 2006, the Kruegers ordered cabinets for their kitchen, two bathrooms and laundry room from Tyca Enterprises, of Kernersville. They paid almost $9,500 as a down payment upfront. The Kruegers said their neighbor was the sales representative.

“His price was really competitive,” Kurt Krueger said. “It wasn't a steal by any means, but it was really competitive, so we decided to give it a shot.”

Krueger claims Tyca owner Kenny Cooper promised the cabinets within six weeks. When that time passed, he started calling.

“It was just excuse after excuse, “ he said.

The master bathroom cabinets came in, but Krueger said they were not the right size.

“They're not exactly what we wanted, but we can make it work," he said.

Krueger called the manufacturer about the rest of the cabinets. He said he was told they had no order for him.

“At that time I said, 'Well, last flag. We're done. We just want out.' Then, I just got excuses and excuses after that,” he said.

Krueger said Cooper agreed to deduct the cost of the master bathroom cabinets and refund the rest of Krueger's deposit, but the $1,350 check Cooper sent was much less than $7,000 Krueger expected.

Krueger then complained to the Better Business Bureau and to the North Carolina Attorney General's Office. When that didn't get results, he called 5 on Your Side.

Cooper told 5 on Your Side that Krueger knew the cabinets might take up to 12 weeks. He also said he was only able to cancel the kitchen cabinet order. But after some back and forth, Cooper agreed to refund Krueger an additional $2,130.

“At this point, (we) just take what we can get,” said Krueger, “Even if we get that.”

Cooper said he sent out a check Thursday.

Although the Kruegers' order form specifies the type of cabinets they wanted, it did not specify delivery date, which is important to include. Another issue was that the neighbor sales representative the Krueger used left Tyca Enterprises, which made the situation difficult.
