RALEIGH, N.C. — The North Carolina Treasurer's Unclaimed Property Fund contains cash and property turned over to the state that could have been from forgotten bank accounts, insurance policies, rental deposits and more.

Five on Your Side has been tracking down people who do not even know they have so-called "missing money."

Phillip Ayscue was thrilled to hear about his newfound money -- more than $600.

When his name was found on the unclaimed property list, Five On Your Side called Ayscue. He was skeptical at first, but quickly realized it was not a mistake.

"When I saw you were legit, and when I called you and you told me I actually had real money, I was floored. I was amazed," he said.

Ayscue then went online to fill out his claim form. That is when he saw the address attached to the account and realized this money had been missing for years!

"At least 13 years ago. We lived at Atchison Street back in '91," Ayscue said.

He says he thinks he has looked at the Web site at least once in the last 13 years, but did not see his name. He thinks the money may be a refund from a local hospital.

Regardless of how it was missed, Ayscue said he is just happy to get the money now.

"I'm not going to look a gift horse in the mouth," he said. "I'm not going to complain about it."

And even though it is unexpected, he already knows how to spend it.

"We need to replace our computer," Ayscue said. "My kids have been pestering me about a new computer, so there's their computer."

So far, Five On Your Side has found almost $174,000 for WRAL viewers. Of course, it cannot call everyone who is owed money, but viewers can call the state's Unclaimed Property office at

to find out if their name is on the list. They can also check online.
