Apple upgrading some iPods for free

Trade in your 6-year-old iPod for a brand new one, no charge.

It sounds too good to be true, right? It's not.

Maybe you've seen one of the emails that claim Apple will let you trade in your first-generation iPod Nano for a brand new one.

Dave Wilson saw the email and had one of the old iPods stuffed in a drawer.

"I couldn't turn it on, it couldn't hold a charge," Wilson said of the iPod that broke a few years ago.

As for the offer, "We weren't sure if it was real," Wilson laughed.

Plenty of people had that same reaction. But Wilson sent in his iPod, thinking "I hope this comes back."

The offer is real.

Apple is recalling first-generation Nanos – that's the ones that are black or white. They were sold between September 2005 and December 2006.

The problem is the battery can overheat. The solution: mail Apple the old one, they'll exchange it for a new one.

Wilson got his new touch screen iPod Nano just weeks after he sent in the old one.

"It's half the size, it does FM radio, as well as songs," he said. "And it's a touch screen, so it's pretty nice."

Wilson has since sent off his wife's Nano.
