RALEIGH, N.C. — Faux butter is showing up in more and more kitchens, but with so many options at the store, it's tough to know which brands taste good while at the same time not sabotaging a diet plan.

Consumer Reports evaluated 15 butter substitutes for taste, texture and nutrition. To make sure the taste portion of the test was as accurate as possible, testers tried out each of the samples alone. No bread, just the spread.

Blue Bonnet is one of the least expensive butter substitutes available, and it's also one of the lowest rated. The spread is is made up 53 percent vegetable oil, and testers said it tasted stale.

The top pick for taste was Land O Lakes Spreadable Butter with Canola Oil. Testers said it tasted just like whipped butter, and it has less saturated fat. Despite that, Land O Lakes has the same amount of calories and total fat as real butter.

For people looking for healthier alternatives, Consumer Reports recommends I Can't Believe It's Not Butter Light Spread and Brummel & Brown 35 Percent Vegetable Oil Spread made with nonfat yogurt.

Each has only 45 calories and five grams of fat per serving.

All three of the butter substitutes that did well in Consumer Reports' tests do not contain any trans fats.
