Walgreens, one of the nation's largest drugstore chains, is dropping the Express Scripts prescription plan, effective Jan. 1, after the two companies failed to reach an agreement on a new contract.

The pharmacy benefit management company said Walgreens' prices were much higher than other pharmacies. Walgreens said it couldn't stay profitable under the terms that Express Scripts offered.

Customers on the Express Scripts plan will need to find a new pharmacy that accepts the benefit. Otherwise, they will have to pay retail prices for their prescriptions.

To switch pharmacies, they only need to take their current prescription bottles to their new pharmacy, which will have customer records transferred from Walgreens.
