FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Investigators in Fayetteville are trying to figure out what sparked two massive fires that left dozens of people without a home Wednesday night.

One happened at around 5:45 p.m. at an apartment complex at 567 Cutchen Lane. The building had 24 apartments in it.

About 15 minutes later and 4 miles away, firefighters were called to another apartment complex at 217 Waterdown Drive. That blaze affected six units.

Twenty-four people were displaced in the fires, which caused about $2 million in damage, authorities said.

As of Wednesday evening, investigators said, they do not believe the fires are linked.

The American Red Cross has been called in to assist those left without a home.
