2012-13 Children's Series: Carolina Theatre
Carolina Theatre in downtown Durham offers a variety of shows for kid and families. Most are scheduled on weekdays for school groups, but individual families are welcome.
Posted — UpdatedThis occasional series about performances for families has been on a bit of a break in the last couple of weeks (thanks to the opening of Buffaloe Road Aquatics Center), but it's back!
Today, we're looking at the family shows offered at Carolina Theatre in downtown Durham. With mostly weekday shows, the series is primarily geared toward school groups. But individual families, who might be homeschooled or tracked out, are welcome too.
Individual tickets are $8 and can be purchased at the box office. Be sure to call the box office at 919-560-3030 to see if tickets are available.
Here's what's scheduled with show descriptions from Carolina Theatre:
- "Skippyjon Jones," 10 a.m. and 11:45 a.m., Thursday, Oct. 25. Skippyjon Jones is a little kitten with big ears and even bigger dreams! Sometimes he pretends to be a bird, sometimes he pretends to be a llama, and sometimes he pretends to be a whale… Anything but a Siamese cat! For preschoolers to third graders.
- "The Wonderful World of Simple Machines, 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 15. This lively, hands-on introduction to the scientific principles and properties of simple machines will provide your students an unforgettable close encounter with levers, inclined planes, screws, wedges, pulleys, and the wheel and axle. For grade schoolers.
- "Beauty and the Beast," 10 a.m. and 11:45 a.m., Nov. 20. Set in France, this musical adaptation of the classic fairy tale tells the story of a young woman who longs for adventure. For grade schoolers.
- "Operation Lunch Line," 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 27. This highly-interactive musical show helps children learn the value of good nutrition and exercise. Using spectacular visual effects in 3-D, the audience joins Kid Power on an amazing journey inside the human body of a boy named Max. For grade schoolers.
- Hispanic Flamenco Ballet, 9:50 a.m. and 11:15 a.m., Thursday, Dec. 6. Shows feature Latin American and Spanish culture. The early show is for all ages. The late morning performance is for kids in sixth to twelfth grade.
- "A Christmas Carol," 10 a.m. and 11:45 a.m., Tuesday, Dec. 11. One of the most beloved holiday stories of all time; this adaptation of the Charles Dickens’ classic is particularly suited for children. Your students will experience all the joy, sentiment and meaning of the original, without the scary imagery and themes meant for older audiences. For grade schoolers.
- "Choosy Suzy Bully Prevention," 10 a.m. and 11:45 a.m., Friday, Jan. 18. Choosy Suzy and her magical confidant Zucchini the Genie, teach young audiences to think clearly and carefully about how to treat each other. For grade schoolers.
- "Warriors Don't Cry," 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 31. In 1957, the Little Rock Nine risked their lives and ended segregation at Central High School. Their struggle changed America. Melba Pattillo Beals was one of those nine. This is her story in her own words. For fifth two twelfth graders.
- "February One," 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., Friday, Feb. 1. February One recounts the story of four freshmen from North Carolina A&T University who initiated the 1960 Greensboro Woolworth lunch counter sit-ins, that set in motion a whirlwind of sit-ins that swept the South and reignited the Civil Rights movement. For sixth to twelfth graders.
- "The Beast: Sanfoka: African American Music from Spirituals to Hip Hop," 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 7. The Beast; A Hip Hop and Jazz quartet, lead by Professor Pierce Freelon, will weave the story of African American Music into an interactive information performance, performing original songs, as well as standards from spiritual, jazz and Hip-Hop canon. For fifth to twelfth graders.
