YOUNGSVILLE, N.C. — A 2-year-old was killed Monday evening when the child ran across a rural Franklin County road into oncoming traffic, the North Carolina State Highway Patrol said.

The wreck happened shortly after 6 p.m. at Mays Crossroads Road near Hill Road near Youngsville. Investigators said the driver was going south on Mays Crossroads Road and that she did not have time to react before hitting the child.

The woman told troopers that she stopped, but later drove to a gas station five miles away and called 911 after the child's family became hostile, the Highway Patrol said.

No charges are expected in the case.
