2 Locales Become Towns
Two area locations have been incorporated into towns.
Posted — UpdatedButner, the only municipality in the country under state control, has been cleared by the U.S. Justice Department to obtain its independence and incorporate. The former World War II military post in Granville County has been state-run since the 1940s.
Dempsey Benton, the former Raleigh city manager who is now secretary of state Department of Health and Human Services, will serve as mayor until Butner can elect its own mayor.
Meanwhile, Eastover also is moving forward with its incorporation, swearing in its Town Council.
The town encompasses 11 square miles and 3,000 residents in Cumberland County. Before Tuesday, the mayor and council members held only unofficial meetings.
On Tuesday night, town officials discussed proposals for banking services, which play a crucial roll in receiving property taxes.
