AHOSKIE, N.C. — A woman in Hertford County and a woman in Halifax County died in separate weather-related incidents, authorities said Tuesday.

The first fatality was a vehicle crash that happened Monday night in Hertford County, near Ahoskie.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol said Mykayia Quintara Wilder, 19, of Ahoskie, was driving east on N.C. Highway 561 near Grant Mitchell Road about 7:40 p.m. when she lost control on the ice-covered roadway.

She traveled left of the center line and collided head-on with a vehicle driven by Brian Keith Matthews, 34, of Henderson.

Wilder died. It was unclear if anyone else was injured in the crash.

“Based on the preliminary investigation, it appears that winter weather was a contributing factor in this collision,” troopers said in a statement.

On Tuesday afternoon, an unidentified woman died in a fire at a home in Enfield.

Enfield Fire Chief Ronnie Locke said the exact cause of the fire is under investigation, but he believes it started in a wood-burning stove that was used for heat.

Locke said when firefighters arrived to the home on N.C. Highway 481, the structure was already destroyed. A man in the house escaped without injury.
