RALEIGH, N.C. — An 18-year-old driver from Wendell was killed early Thursday morning in a two-car wreck on U.S. Highway 264, officials said.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol responded around 2:22 a.m. to the crash near mile marker 424 just east of Raleigh. Troopers said a 2000 Ford Explorer was traveling east on U.S. 264 when it crashed into a 2014 Hino Rollback truck that was stopped on the paved shoulder in the median.

The driver of the Ford, Brandon James Japhet, a 2015 graduate of East Wake High School, died in the accident. Troopers said there was no evidence that Japhet slowed down before colliding with the truck. Troopers don't think Japhet was under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Troopers identified the driver of the truck as Justin Curtis Everett, 30, of Creedmoor, and a passenger as Christopher Anthony Avila, 51, of Winterville. Officials did not release whether Everett or Avila was injured.
