15-year-old charged in Clayton vandalism

The juvenile, whose name was withheld, was charged with damaging buildings, heavy equipment, tools and various construction materials at the construction site on Amelia Church Road on Aug. 23, 2008. The juvenile also was charged with breaking and entering and larceny in connection with $500 in tools taken from the site and with damaging a fence and light pole owned by Johnston County Schools.

Damage caused during the incident was estimated at more than $50,000.

Investigators said they believe vandals broke into a construction trailer on the site and started up some heavy equipment, including a bulldozer. Using the heavy equipment, they damaged the buildings under construction, a large quantity of building materials and other equipment.

Police said the case remains under investigation, and more arrests are possible.

The $6 million, 30,000-square-foot community center will have classrooms, a child-care center and a gymnasium and a lighted outdoor patio suitable for events and receptions. It will also be the new home of the Parks & Recreation Department.
