10 charged in Durham drug operation

Ten people were charged in a three-week drug operation that targeted "hot spots" in southern Durham, police said Thursday.

DURHAM, N.C. — Ten people were charged in a three-week drug operation that targeted "hot spots" in southern Durham, police said Thursday.

Durham police said the operation was aimed at reducing violent crime by focusing on street-level drug sales and drug sales from residential properties.

Investigators from the Special Operations Division conducted nine controlled buys of crack cocaine last month. Officers concluded the operation on Aug. 31 by executing search warrants at 521-B Barton St. and 522 Cecil St.

Officers said they recovered 240 hydrocodone pills, drug paraphernalia and cash from the Barton Street dwelling.

Patrick Randy Smith, 47, who lives at the address, was charged with trafficking in Schedule 1 narcotics; possession of cocaine with intent to manufacture, sell or deliver within 1,000 feet of a school; two counts of possession of cocaine with the intent to manufacture, sell or deliver; two counts of maintaining a dwelling for drug sale; sale and delivery of cocaine; and possession of drug paraphernalia.

He was placed in Durham County jail under a $1 million bond.

Officers recovered pills and drug paraphernalia at 522 Cecil St. and arrested 50-year-old Terry Wayne Thompson on two counts of possession of cocaine with the intent to manufacture, sell or deliver; conspiracy to sell and deliver cocaine; maintaining a dwelling for drug sales; and possession of drug paraphernalia.

His bond was set at $10,000.

Investigators also made the following arrests:

  • Aaron Fitzgerald Stone, 47, of Orchard Way, charged with possession of cocaine with the intent to manufacture, sell or deliver; sale and delivery of cocaine; conspiracy to sell and deliver cocaine; and possession of cocaine within 1,000 feet of a school.
  • Raymond Dixon, 43, of Ashe Street, charged with possession of cocaine with the intent to manufacture, sell or deliver; sale and delivery of cocaine; conspiracy to sell cocaine; and maintaining a dwelling for drug sales.
  • Marsha Bynum, 51, of North Hyde Park Avenue, charged with possession of cocaine with the intent to manufacture, sell or deliver; sale and delivery of cocaine; conspiracy to sell and deliver cocaine; possession of cocaine with the intent to manufacture, sell or deliver within 1,000 feet of a school; and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Investigators are still looking for the following people:

  • Wallace Jones, 39, of Sargent Place, wanted for possession of cocaine with the intent to manufacture, sell and deliver; sell/deliver cocaine; conspiracy to sell/deliver cocaine; possession of drug paraphernalia; and possession of cocaine with the intent to manufacture, sell or deliver within 1,000 feet of a park.
  • Nathan Edwards, 17, of Dayton Street, wanted on two counts of possession of marijuana with the intent to manufacture, sell and deliver; and two counts of sale and deliver marijuana
  • John Webb, 39, of Barton Street, wanted on two counts each of possession of cocaine with the intent to manufacture, sell or deliver; possession of drug paraphernalia; sale of cocaine; delivery of cocaine; maintaining a dwelling for drug sales; and possession of cocaine with the intent to manufacture, sell or deliver within 1,000 feet of a school. He is also wanted for conspiracy to sell cocaine and conspiracy to deliver cocaine
  • Dominique Diaz, 19, of Maple Street, wanted for possession of marijuana with the intent to manufacture, sell or deliver and sale/delivery of marijuana.
  • Shanell Alston, 19, of Ridgeway Avenue, is wanted for possession of cocaine with the intent to manufacture, sell or deliver and sale/delivery of cocaine.
