1 teen charged with sexual assault involving Southwest Edgecombe High School students, police say

One teenager has been charged with sexual assault involving Southwest Edgecombe High School students, according to officials.

PINETOPS, N.C. — One teenager has been charged with sexual assault involving Southwest Edgecombe High School students, according to officials.

Edgecombe County Sheriff Clee Atkinson said his office is also investigating two other reported rapes, though it was not clear if those rapes are connected to the teenager who was charged.

District officials said, "the safety and well-being of our students and staff is our highest priority and we take all student matters very seriously."

Officials said they are coordinating with the Edgecombe County Sheriff's Office to investigate the assaults.

It is unknown how many victims there are at this time.
