'Sandhills Promise' will cover community college costs for Moore, Hoke students
High school graduates in Moore and Hoke counties will have the chance to attend Sandhills Community College tuition free for two years, beginning in 2017, thanks to a program announced by the school Wednesday.

"Sandhills is embarking on a mission to help fulfill the dreams of young people that they would otherwise not be able to attain,” Germaine Elkins, executive director of the SCC Foundation, said in a statement.
"By fostering the ambitions of our recent high school graduates, we are doing something extraordinary for these students and our community."
To qualify for the Sandhills Promise program for fall 2017, current high school seniors will be required to complete two College and Career Promise classes at the community college with a GPA of 2.0 or higher.
Current high school juniors and younger students will be required to complete at least four CCP classes prior to graduation from high school.
After graduation, the Sandhills Promise program will cover tuition costs at the in-state rate for two years.
Students must first utilize all other financial aid sources, including federal, state and SCC scholarship aid, and Sandhills Promise will then cover any unmet tuition costs at the in-state rate, officials said.
A completed Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and an SCC scholarship application will be required annually.
To learn more about the program, SCC is hosting two information sessions. Families from Hoke County should attend a Sept. 27 session at 6 p.m. in the Turlington School Auditorium.
