Brian Selznick, the award-winning author and illustrator, will be in Raleigh this month to share his new book "The Marvels" and a special multimedia program.

The program, a Quail Ridge Books & Music's author event, takes place at 7 p.m., Oct. 16, at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Raleigh, 3313 Wade Ave., just down the street from the book store.

Selznick is known for his epics, best for ages 9 and up, that combine both illustrations and words. My 10-year-old poured over "The Marvels" when we were in the store last week for another event. Apparently it has more than 400 pictures!

Selznick is a Caldecott Medal recipient for "The Invention of Hugo Cabret." Martin Scorsese directed the film version of the book. "Hugo" came out in 2011. Selznick also the author of "Wonderstruck," among others.

Here's what the folks at Quail Ridge say about "The Marvels," which they call luminous: "As in Wonderstruck, two story lines are connected – but how? Massively illustrated, The Marvels is a story of family, the past, and puzzles, stretching over centuries."

I'm told Selznick's multimedia program is not to be missed. Doors open at 6 p.m. You can get tickets a couple of ways:

  • Buy "The Marvels" from Quail Ridge and get as many as five tickets for the program. You'll also get a ticket for the signing line to have him sign your book. The book sells for $32.99. It's best to call the store to order your book as soon as you know you're going so you can get an earlier signing line ticket.
  • $5 admission only tickets also are available (but you won't get a ticket for the signing line).
