'Home for the holidays' rings true for Johnston County family
A Johnston County family of seven whose house was destroyed by fire last week is getting a home for the holidays.
Posted — UpdatedHarold and Sharon Dixon, along with their five children, were asleep one week ago when flames erupted in a bedroom of their home on Buffalo Road in Archer Lodge.
"It's not fun waking up at 3 or 4 o'clock in the morning and your house is on fire," Harold Dixon said. "You can't get to your kids because you're on one end and they're on the other end, and there's a fire between you and them."
The family moved in to a Super 8 motel room, and 10-year-old Quenton said all he wanted for Christmas was a new home.
"(There are) so many people out there who care, and I don't know them but I love them from the bottom of my heart," Sharon Dixon said, adding that donations came in from North Carolina residents, as well as far away well-wishers in New York, Maryland, Virginia, Minnesota and Colorado.
But thanks to a local developer, and just in time for Christmas, Quenton got his wish. On Saturday, the family moved into a Clayton four-bedroom that Sharon Dixon called a "dream home."
Instead of dwelling on the many things fire robbed from them, the Dixons' Christmas is about the blessings they have and the love they share.
"If you've got each other, that's all that really matters," Harold Dixon said.
